How can you create 3,000°F sparks in less than a second? Use some heat chemistry, of course. While this steel rod (sometimes called firesteel) may have been designed for survival use, it is an attention-grabbing example of a chemical reaction know as pyrophorics. As tiny amounts of iron are quickly scraped from the rod, they sponataniously oxidize and combust into a bright, hot spark. Use it to light bunsen burners, campfires, or barbecues. It is the exact same firestarter seen on the Discovery Networks show, Man Vs. Wild. (see clip below) This stick is good for over 1,000 strikes. This is not a toy and should be demonstrated only by adults.
